What is a Nursing Home?

A nursing home is a facility for the residential care of elderly or disabled people. Nursing homes may also be referred to as skilled nursing facility, long-term care facilities, old people's homes, care homes, rest homes, convalescent homes or convalescent care.

Many people think that all senior living options are nursing homes! Actually, nursing homes are for people that require a higher degree of medical attention than is typically available in assisted living.

What does a Nursing Home include?

A nursing home provides permanent custodial care – including 24-hour care, room and board. certified health professionals, meal preparation, and assistance with everyday living tasks such as bathing, grooming, bathroom use, medication monitoring, and more. Many nursing homes also have special wings for Alzheimer’s and dementia patients. Nursing home care is paid first privately and then covered by Medicaid.
